Best Places to Train Combat in OSRS

Training combat is something almost every OSRS player spends hundreds of hours doing.

Attack. Strength. Defence. Hitpoints.

You could technically train them almost anywhere.

But choosing the right monsters can make the grind much faster.

Some locations are great because monsters have low Defence. Others are popular because you can AFK for long periods without constantly clicking another enemy.

Here are some of the best places to train combat in OSRS.

1. Chickens

It doesn't get much more old-school than this.

Chickens are great for brand-new accounts because they have low combat stats and are easy to kill.

You can find them around Lumbridge and several other locations.

The feathers they drop can also be sold, giving completely new players a little starting GP.

You won't stay here long.

Once you're comfortably killing chickens, move on.

2. Cows

Cows are another classic low-level training option.

They have more Hitpoints than chickens and drop cowhide, which can be sold or used for Crafting.

The cow field near Lumbridge is particularly convenient for new players.

It's not amazing XP.

But for your first combat levels, it works perfectly fine.

3. Hill Giants

Once your combat stats improve, Hill Giants become a more interesting option.

They provide better Hitpoints than extremely low-level monsters and drop Big bones.

You can bury the bones for Prayer XP or sell them.

Hill Giants also drop Giant keys, which can be used to fight Obor.

That gives newer players a natural introduction to beginner bossing while they're training combat.

4. Sand Crabs

Sand Crabs are where combat training becomes much more relaxed.

They have high Hitpoints and very low Defence.

More importantly, they're aggressive.

That means they'll automatically attack you for a period of time, allowing you to train without constantly selecting new monsters.

They're especially popular with:

-Pures

-Low-level accounts

-AFK players

-Players training Strength

You'll occasionally need to reset their aggression, but otherwise Sand Crabs require very little attention.

5. Ammonite Crabs

Ammonite Crabs are one of the most popular AFK combat training methods in OSRS.

You'll find them on Fossil Island.

Like Sand Crabs, they have high Hitpoints and low Defence, making them excellent training targets.

The main advantage is consistency.

You're not training here for valuable drops.

You're training because you can continuously deal damage with very little interruption.

For players working toward higher melee stats while doing something else on another screen, Ammonite Crabs are hard to beat.

6. Slayer Tasks

Slayer isn't technically one training location.

That's exactly why it's so good.

Instead of sitting at crabs for dozens of hours, Slayer sends you around Gielinor fighting different monsters.

You'll train combat while simultaneously gaining Slayer XP.

As your Slayer level increases, you'll also unlock better monsters, bosses, and money-making opportunities.

Pure combat XP may not always be as fast as dedicated training methods.

But you're progressing two things at once.

For most accounts, that's worth considering.

7. Nightmare Zone

Nightmare Zone has been one of the most recognizable combat training methods for years.

You fight bosses from quests you've previously completed inside a customizable combat encounter.

With the right setup, you can train for long periods with relatively little attention.

Nightmare Zone is particularly useful for players who want to train Attack, Strength, or Defence without constantly travelling between monsters.

You'll also earn Nightmare Zone points that can be used for certain rewards and upgrades.

8. Scurrius

Scurrius is an excellent step between ordinary combat training and more serious PvM.

Instead of simply clicking a monster and waiting, you'll need to react to mechanics.

That makes Scurrius useful for learning things like movement and Prayer switching while still earning combat XP.

For newer players interested in eventually getting into bossing, this can be much more valuable than spending every combat level at crabs.

You're not just increasing numbers.

You're learning how OSRS combat actually works.

9. Pest Control

Pest Control offers another alternative to ordinary monster training.

You'll work with other players to protect the Void Knight while attacking portals and enemies.

The activity rewards Pest Control points that can eventually be used toward Void Knight equipment.

This means you're training combat while working toward an important account unlock.

It's not always the absolute fastest combat XP.

But getting useful equipment at the same time makes it worthwhile.

10. High-Level Slayer and PvM

Eventually, you don't really need a dedicated combat training location.

Your combat stats will naturally increase while doing:

-Slayer

-Bossing

-Raids

-Minigames

-Other PvM

This is often the best approach for high-level accounts.

Instead of grinding Attack or Strength purely for XP, you can make GP and chase valuable drops while your combat stats increase naturally.

AFK vs Active Combat Training

The best location depends on how you want to play.

If you're working, watching videos, or doing something else, Sand Crabs and Ammonite Crabs are excellent.

If you want account progression, Slayer is usually more useful.

If you want to improve at PvM, fight bosses and mechanically interesting enemies.

There isn't one correct choice.

Which Combat Stat Should You Train First?

For melee accounts, Strength is often worth prioritizing because higher Strength increases your maximum hit.

Attack still matters because it improves accuracy and unlocks better weapons.

Defence gives you access to stronger armor and reduces the damage you take.

A common approach is reaching an important Attack milestone for a weapon, then putting more focus into Strength.

Don't Waste Your Entire Bank on Training Gear

Better equipment helps.

But you don't need endgame armor to train efficiently.

Weapon upgrades often provide more noticeable improvements than expensive defensive upgrades.

Keep enough GP available for food, potions, Prayer supplies, teleports, and other account goals.

Final Thoughts

The best combat training location depends on your account and how much attention you want to give the game.

Brand-new players can start with chickens, cows, and Hill Giants.

Sand Crabs and Ammonite Crabs are excellent when you want relaxed XP.

Nightmare Zone offers another low-effort option, while Slayer lets you train combat while progressing one of the game's most important skills.

And once you're ready for harder content, start bossing.

Combat levels matter.

But learning how to actually use them matters too.
